Can ChatGPT Make PowerPoints? Yes, Here's How

Can ChatGPT make PowerPoints? Yes, if you sign in. OpenAI has two official routes: the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in and ChatGPT Work.

Without an account, the answer is no. We tested this on 12 October 2026: ChatGPT answered that file generation was not available, and it showed the slides in the chat only.

This guide gives the steps for each method, the prompts, and what breaks. It shows where each fact comes from: our test, OpenAI's help pages, or a review video.

Can ChatGPT Really Make PowerPoints?

Yes, with an account. What you get depends on where you ask:

This was different when we first published this guide. In May 2025, the request "make me a PowerPoint about the history of France" gave one image in the chat:

Our test in May 2025: one image, not a deck.

Our test on 12 October 2026

We used the test from our comparison of AI presentation makers: one prompt and a one-page report for a company that does not exist. You can get the report as a PDF or as plain text.

We opened chatgpt.com in a browser with no account.

Step 1. We tried to attach the report. We could not. Without an account, the menu lets you add photos only. "Add files" shows "Log in".

ChatGPT without an account, 12 October 2026: a document upload needs a login.

Step 2. We pasted the report text and sent this prompt:

Text
Create an 8-slide quarterly business review for the leadership team
from the report below. Slide 1 is the title. Include one chart of
monthly revenue, one slide with the three main risks, and one slide
with the Q4 plan. Use only the numbers in the report. Do not add data
from other sources. Give me the result as a PowerPoint (.pptx) file.

Step 3. ChatGPT did not make the file. After about 20 seconds it answered that it needed "file-generation capabilities, which aren't available in this session".

ChatGPT without an account, 12 October 2026: no PowerPoint file.

Step 4. We asked for the slides as text. Our first message got no reply, and we do not know the cause. After we sent it again, ChatGPT showed 8 slides in the chat, with a chart.

The slides were in the chat only. The numbers agree with the report. There is no file to download.

What we found:

  • The 8 facts that we checked were correct.
  • ChatGPT added 3 values that it calculated, although the prompt said to use only the numbers in the report. The calculations were correct.
  • We asked for at most 4 bullets on each slide. The slides were much longer.
  • You cannot download these slides. To use them, you copy the text into PowerPoint (Method 4).

How to Make a PowerPoint with ChatGPT: 4 Methods

Select the method by what you have. For Methods 1 to 3, the steps come from OpenAI's help pages, which we read on 12 October 2026. The results come from the review videos that we link.

MethodYou needResult
1. PowerPoint add-inPowerPoint and a ChatGPT accountEditable slides in your open deck
2. ChatGPT WorkA plan that has WorkA .pptx file or a Google Slides deck
3. File from a regular chatA ChatGPT accountA .pptx file, if the chat can make files
4. Outline, then importDesktop PowerPoint. No account is necessaryText-only slides in your own theme

Method 1: Use the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in

ChatGPT works in a sidebar in PowerPoint. There is no file to download and no text to paste.

  1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
  2. On the Home tab, select Add-ins.
  3. Search for ChatGPT and add it.
  4. Open ChatGPT from the ribbon and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
  5. Type your request in the sidebar. You can use notes, a document, or a spreadsheet as source material.
  6. Examine each slide before you share the deck.

A prompt for a new deck:

Text
Create a 10-slide deck on [topic] for [audience].
Use the layouts in this template.
Slide 1 is the title. Slide 2 is the agenda.
The last slide is next steps.
One idea per slide. At most 4 bullets per slide.
Do not change any existing slides.

OpenAI's guidance gives three habits:

  • Say what to change, what to keep, and where the edit goes.
  • Ask for a plan before a large edit.
  • Make a copy of the file first. ChatGPT can change or delete content.

What a reviewer got: In a United Top Tech tutorial (24 May 2026), the add-in made the 5 slides that the reviewer asked for, with a pie chart, a graph, and an image. He says that each element was editable and was not a flat image. He then changed the style of one slide with a second request.

Plan: OpenAI lists the add-in for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 users. Free and Go have limited usage.

Method 2: Create the file with ChatGPT Work

Work is the part of ChatGPT for tasks that end in a finished file.

  1. Open ChatGPT and select Work.
  2. Describe the presentation and how you will use it.
  3. Attach the source material: notes, a report, or a spreadsheet.
  4. Name the output format. Ask for a PowerPoint (.pptx) file. If you connected the Google Workspace app, you can ask for a Google Slides deck.
  5. Say what must stay the same, such as slide order, branding, or tone.
  6. Examine the file and ask for changes before you use it.

A prompt to copy:

Text
Create a PowerPoint (.pptx) presentation from the attached report.
Audience: [who]. Goal: [what they must decide or learn].
12 slides: title, summary, 8 content slides, risks, next steps.
Write each slide title as a conclusion, not a label.
Add speaker notes. List every number you used and its source.

To get your company style, attach a reference deck and say what to keep. For repeat work, select @Presentations in the composer to use a template.

Plan: OpenAI's instructions for Work say that availability depends on your plan and workspace settings. When we read the plan pages on 2 October 2026, Work was not on the Free and Go plans. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month.

Work makes the file. To change a deck that is open in PowerPoint, use the add-in from Method 1.

Method 3: Ask for a .pptx file in a regular chat

Sign in first. Our test shows that this method does not work without an account.

Text
Create a 7-slide PowerPoint file (.pptx) about [topic].
One title and 3 short bullets per slide.
Add speaker notes to each slide.
Give me a download link to the file.

What a reviewer got: In a Technoholic comparison (9 March 2026) on the Pro plan, the first answer was slide text only. After a second request, ChatGPT gave a PowerPoint file to download. The reviewer says that it looked plain and needed manual work.

OpenAI has step-by-step articles for the add-in and for Work only. There is no plan table for this method. If you get text and no file, ask again for the file, or use Method 1 or Method 4.

Method 4: Write the outline in ChatGPT and import it

This method works on all plans, and without an account. ChatGPT writes the words. PowerPoint makes the slides. The ChatGPT part is from our test. The import steps are from Microsoft's instructions.

  1. Ask ChatGPT for an outline with the outline prompt in the next section.
  2. Paste the outline into Word. Apply Heading 1 to each slide title and Heading 2 to each bullet.
  3. Save the document.
  4. In PowerPoint for Windows, select Home, then New Slide, then Slides from Outline. Select the document and select Insert.
  5. Apply a theme on the Design tab, then add visuals.

PowerPoint makes one slide for each Heading 1. It accepts .docx, .rtf, and .txt outlines.

On a Mac, the command is Home, the arrow next to New Slide, then Outline, and the file must be .rtf or .txt. Microsoft's instructions say that PowerPoint for the web does not support this.

ChatGPT Prompts for PowerPoint Slides

Copy a prompt and replace the text in brackets. Specific prompts give better slides than "make me a PowerPoint about X".

Outline prompt (use it with Method 4):

Text
Write a slide outline for a [length]-minute presentation
on [topic] for [audience].
Give me [number] slides.
For each slide: a title of at most 8 words that states
the conclusion, then 3 bullets of at most 12 words each.
Do not add an introduction or closing text.

Slide copy prompt (to make your text shorter):

Text
Rewrite the slides below for an executive audience.
Keep one idea per slide. Cut every bullet to one line.
Change each title into the main conclusion of the slide.
Do not add new facts.

[paste your slides]

Speaker notes prompt:

Text
Write speaker notes for each slide below.
About 100 words per slide, in spoken language.
Start each note with the one sentence I must say.
Do not repeat the bullets word for word.

[paste your slides]

For the delivery, see our guide to PowerPoint speaker notes.

Review prompt (use it before you present):

Text
You are the audience for this deck: [describe them].
List the 5 hardest questions you would ask.
Then name the 2 weakest slides and say why.

Where ChatGPT PowerPoints Fall Short

What broke in our test on 12 October 2026, without an account:

  • No file. ChatGPT showed the slides in the chat only.
  • No document upload. We had to paste the report text.
  • One message got no reply. We sent it again.
  • Limits in the prompt were not obeyed. We asked for at most 4 bullets on each slide and got more. We asked for no added numbers and got 3 calculated values.

Limits that OpenAI gives for the PowerPoint add-in:

  • Templates. Slides may not always match your preferred style.
  • Advanced edits. Some chart, shape, formatting, and slide-management edits are limited or in development.
  • Accuracy. Outputs can be incomplete or incorrect. Check claims, numbers, and slide changes before you share.
  • Deleted content. ChatGPT can make mistakes when it edits or deletes content. Make a copy of the deck first.
  • Usage. Free and Go have limited usage. Larger decks and edits in many steps use more of your allowance.
  • PowerPoint is necessary. The add-in operates in Microsoft PowerPoint, so Microsoft's terms apply to the file too.

Why Not Just Use ChatGPT Alone?

You can. For an internal update, or a deck that must stay editable in your company template, ChatGPT with the add-in is a good tool. For that job it is a better fit than GenPPT.

GenPPT fits a different job: designed slides from a topic or a document. We ran the same prompt and the same report through GenPPT on 12 October 2026. It made 8 slides in about 4 minutes, and the 8 facts that we checked were correct.

GenPPT, 12 October 2026: the chart slide from the same prompt and report.

Know the limits of GenPPT: each slide is one image. You cannot edit the text or the chart in PowerPoint. GenPPT has no free plan. In our test, one of the 8 slides was weak. The full result is in our comparison.

Use ChatGPT when:

  • You must change a deck that you have now.
  • The deck must stay in your company template as editable text and shapes.
  • The content is more important than the design.

Use GenPPT when:

  • You start from a topic or a document and you need designed slides.
  • You do not want to do the layout work.
  • You want to approve an outline before the slides are made.

You can use the two tools together. Do the thinking in ChatGPT, save the outline as a text file, and upload it to GenPPT as your source.

If your source is a PDF, ChatGPT can summarize it as text. See Can ChatGPT Summarize a PDF? for the upload limits. To go from the PDF to slides, see PDF to PowerPoint with AI.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT make a PowerPoint for free?

With a free account: OpenAI lists the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in on the Free plan with limited usage, and you need Microsoft PowerPoint. Without an account: no. In our test on 12 October 2026, ChatGPT made no file and showed the slides in the chat only.

How do I get ChatGPT to create a .pptx file?

Sign in. Then open ChatGPT, select Work, describe the deck, attach your sources, and ask for a PowerPoint (.pptx) file. If your plan does not have Work, install the ChatGPT add-in in PowerPoint and make the slides there.

Can ChatGPT make a PowerPoint without an account?

No. We tested this on 12 October 2026. ChatGPT answered that file generation was not available in that session. It could show the slides as text in the chat, and you can copy that text into PowerPoint.

Can ChatGPT make Google Slides presentations?

OpenAI says that ChatGPT Work can create or edit Google Slides when the Google Workspace app is enabled and connected. Without Work, make a .pptx file and open it in Google Slides. Our guide shows how to convert PowerPoint to Google Slides.

Can ChatGPT edit an existing PowerPoint?

OpenAI says that the PowerPoint add-in can add slides, revise slides, and tighten a deck for an audience. Tell it which slides to change and which to keep. OpenAI recommends that you make a copy of the file first.

Do ChatGPT PowerPoints look professional?

Reviewers call the results plain. In a comparison from 9 March 2026, the file from a normal chat looked plain and needed manual work. In a tutorial from 24 May 2026, the add-in made slides with a chart, a graph, and an image. OpenAI says that slides may not always match your preferred style. Plan time for a design pass, or use a dedicated deck builder for the design.

Is there an official ChatGPT integration for PowerPoint?

Yes. ChatGPT for PowerPoint is an OpenAI add-in in the Microsoft Marketplace. You install it from Home, then Add-ins, in PowerPoint and sign in with your ChatGPT account.

Can ChatGPT write speaker notes?

Yes. Paste your slide text and ask for notes of a set length per slide, in spoken language. The speaker notes prompt in the prompts section is ready to copy.
