Can ChatGPT make PowerPoints? Yes. As of October 2026, ChatGPT creates real, editable PowerPoint slides.

The two routes with official instructions are the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in (on every plan, including Free) and ChatGPT Work (on Plus and higher plans). You can also ask for a deck in a regular chat.

The slides are editable, but the design is basic, and OpenAI tells you to review the output before you share it. If you want designed slides from a prompt or a document, use a dedicated builder like GenPPT.

Can ChatGPT Really Make PowerPoints?

Yes. ChatGPT can create a presentation file, add slides to a deck you have open, and rewrite slides in place.

What you get depends on where you ask:

This was not true when we first published this post. In May 2025, the request "make me a PowerPoint about the history of France" returned one image in the chat:

That image looked like a slide. You could not edit the text, reorder slides, or present from it.

Two OpenAI releases changed the answer:

• ChatGPT for PowerPoint. A ChatGPT sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint. OpenAI's release notes list it as generally available from July 6, 2026.
• ChatGPT Work. An agent for longer tasks that produces finished files, presentations included. OpenAI introduced it on July 9, 2026.

ChatGPT does these jobs well:

• Outlines, slide titles, bullet points, and speaker notes
• Turning a long document into a slide structure
• Adding or rewriting slides in a deck you already have
• Reviewing a deck's story and telling you what is missing

ChatGPT does not do these jobs well yet:

• Visual design. ChatGPT can add charts and generated images, but a third-party test in September 2026 found its designs basic.
• Exact template matching. OpenAI says generated slides may not always match your preferred style.
• Advanced edits. OpenAI lists some chart, shape, formatting, and slide-management edits as limited or still in development.
• Accuracy. You must check claims and numbers yourself.

How to Make a PowerPoint with ChatGPT: 4 Methods

Pick the method by what you have: PowerPoint installed, a paid ChatGPT plan, or neither.

Method 1: Use the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in

This is the most direct method. ChatGPT works inside PowerPoint, so there is no file to download and no text to paste.

1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
2. On the Home tab, select Add-ins.
3. Search for ChatGPT and add it.
4. Open ChatGPT from the ribbon and sign in with your ChatGPT account.
5. Type your request in the sidebar. You can attach notes, a document, or a spreadsheet as source material.
6. Review each slide before you share the deck.

A prompt that works for a new deck:

Create a 10-slide deck on [topic] for [audience].
Use the layouts in this template.
Slide 1 is the title. Slide 2 is the agenda.
The last slide is next steps.
One idea per slide. At most 4 bullets per slide.
Do not change any existing slides.

Three habits from OpenAI's own guidance make the result better:

• Say what to change, what to keep, and where the edit goes.
• Ask for a plan before a large edit.
• Duplicate the file first. ChatGPT can change or delete content when a request is vague.

Plan: all plans. Free and Go have limited usage. On Plus, Pro, and Business, the add-in counts against your plan's agentic usage limit.

Method 2: Create the file with ChatGPT Work

Work is the agent side of ChatGPT. It is built for multi-step tasks that end in a finished file.

1. Open ChatGPT on the web or in the mobile app and select Work.
2. Describe the presentation and how you will use it.
3. Attach the source material: notes, a report, a spreadsheet.
4. Name the output format. Ask for a PowerPoint (.pptx) file. If you connected the Google Workspace app in ChatGPT, you can ask for a Google Slides deck.
5. Say what must stay the same, such as slide order, branding, or tone.
6. Review the file and ask for changes before you rely on it.

A prompt to copy:

Create a PowerPoint (.pptx) presentation from the attached report.
Audience: [who]. Goal: [what they must decide or learn].
12 slides: title, summary, 8 content slides, risks, next steps.
Write each slide title as a conclusion, not a label.
Add speaker notes. List every number you used and its source.

To match your company style, attach a reference deck and say what to keep. For repeat work, Work on the web has reusable templates: select @Presentations in the composer to pick one.

Plan: Work is not on Free or Go. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month.

Many older guides tell you to pick "Agent mode". OpenAI's current instructions for presentation files point to Work.

Work creates the file. To change a deck that is open in PowerPoint, use the add-in from Method 1.

Method 3: Ask for a .pptx file in a regular chat

You can ask for a file in a normal chat:

Create a 7-slide PowerPoint file (.pptx) about [topic].
One title and 3 short bullets per slide.
Add speaker notes to each slide.
Give me a download link to the file.

You can also upload an outline or an existing deck first. OpenAI's presentations page shows this use: you give ChatGPT a rough outline and ask it to turn the outline into a 6-slide deck.

OpenAI's help center has step-by-step articles for the add-in and for Work only. There is no plan table for this method, so expect the limits to vary. On the Free plan, file uploads and data analysis have separate usage limits.

The result is reported, not verified by us. Guides that tested the Free plan report plain slides: a white background, a title, and a bullet list. A September 2026 test by Plus AI in the chat interface got slides with metric cards and a small chart, in a basic design.

Save the file when you get the link. If you get text and no file, use Method 1 or Method 4.

Method 4: Write the outline in ChatGPT and import it

This method works on any plan and gives you full control. ChatGPT writes the words. PowerPoint makes the slides.

1. Ask ChatGPT for an outline with the outline prompt in the next section.
2. Paste the outline into Word. Apply Heading 1 to each slide title and Heading 2 to each bullet.
3. Save the document.
4. In PowerPoint for Windows, select Home, then New Slide, then Slides from Outline. Select the document and select Insert.
5. Apply a theme on the Design tab, then add visuals.

PowerPoint makes one slide for each Heading 1. It accepts .docx, .rtf, and .txt outlines.

On a Mac, the command is Home, the arrow next to New Slide, then Outline, and the file must be .rtf or .txt. Microsoft's instructions say PowerPoint for the web does not support this.

Two more routes: Canva and VBA

Canva in ChatGPT. OpenAI's presentations page says you can create, preview, and edit Canva designs inside a chat. Mention "Canva" in your message and ask for a presentation. The result is a Canva design. We did not verify the plan and account requirements.

A VBA macro. Many older guides tell you to ask ChatGPT for VBA code, paste the code into PowerPoint's Visual Basic editor, and run it. This was the usual workaround before ChatGPT could create files. The add-in in Method 1 now does the same job without code.

ChatGPT Prompts for PowerPoint Slides

Copy a prompt and replace the text in brackets. Specific prompts give better slides than "make me a PowerPoint about X".

Outline prompt (use it with Method 4):

Write a slide outline for a [length]-minute presentation
on [topic] for [audience].
Give me [number] slides.
For each slide: a title of at most 8 words that states
the conclusion, then 3 bullets of at most 12 words each.
Do not add an introduction or closing text.

Where ChatGPT PowerPoints Fall Short

ChatGPT gives you a real, editable file. It does not always give you a finished-looking deck. These are the limits to plan for:

• The design is basic. In a September 2026 test by Plus AI, ChatGPT added charts and generated images, but its designs were the most basic of the tools compared.
• Templates are not matched exactly. OpenAI says the add-in works within existing templates where possible, but slides may not match your style perfectly. In the same test, ChatGPT in a chat replaced template colors with its own. The add-in followed the template more closely.
• Edits can break a layout. In the same test, a request for more text made a callout box overflow its slide.
• Advanced edits are limited. OpenAI lists some chart, shape, formatting, and slide-management edits as limited or still in development.
• It can change or delete content. Duplicate the deck before a large edit.
• Facts need a check. OpenAI tells you to review claims, numbers, and slide changes before you share.
• Usage is capped. Free and Go have limited usage. Larger decks and multi-step edits use more of your plan's allowance.
• The add-in needs PowerPoint. It runs inside Microsoft PowerPoint, so Microsoft's terms apply to the file too.
